About Marismas del Guadiana Natural Park

Marismas del Guadiana Natural Park is a protected wetland area situated along the Guadiana River estuary, straddling the border between the Andalusian region of Spain and the Algarve region of Portugal. This unique natural park comprises extensive marshes, salt flats, tidal channels, and reed beds, forming a crucial habitat for migratory birds and diverse aquatic and terrestrial species. The park is recognized for its rich biodiversity, including populations of flamingos, purple herons, Eurasian bitterns, and a variety of waterfowl and wader species. Additionally, the park supports mammals like the Iberian lynx, otters, and several species of amphibians and fish. Historically, this area has been shaped by human interaction with the river’s natural flooding cycles, with traditional agriculture and salt harvesting still practiced in a sustainable manner. Recreationally, the park is a haven for birdwatchers, photographers, and ecotourists, with networked footpaths and observation hides allowing visitors to experience the park’s rich wildlife undisturbed. Canoeing and kayaking on the Guadiana River offer a unique perspective of the estuarine environment, while quiet beaches along the park’s shores provide places for relaxation. The park’s strategic location at the Iberian Peninsula’s southern border and its ecological importance as a Ramsar Wetland Site further enhance its value. Visitors are attracted not only by the natural spectacle but by the peaceful atmosphere and scenic views of wetlands merging with the Atlantic Ocean. Marismas del Guadiana Natural Park embodies a critically important natural refuge and an outstanding destination for immersive nature-based recreation.
